THE JOY OF FOSTERING PUPPY MILL DOGS

After about a year of fostering ARF dogs that came from local kill shelters, I decided it might be an added benefit to the overall effort to choose a dog that had been at the vets for a really long time as a foster. Some of these dogs had no particular problems but were just stuck in their little cages for more than two months by the luck of the draw.

But ahh, the dogs that ARF occasionally takes from puppy mill closures. I really find those the most rewarding and I wanted to tell you why. I got this idea when Hector jumped up on my leg yesterday.
However, first you need a little bit of background.

All puppy mill dogs are not the same, any more than all pet dogs are the same or all people are the same. Some come to us in good health and some are already friendly—we try to refer to this type as breeder surrenders, but sometimes we slip up and call them puppy mill dogs too.

The saddest puppy mill dogs are the ones that have been neglected. They may have health problems or untreated injuries. Almost certainly they are dirty stinky messes with matted fur when we get them. Many have been in cages for their entire lives, rarely given a break and usually only for the time required to breed them to get more puppies. Some have been in crowded conditions and some have suffered physical abuse. Some have had poor diets—not enough food or poor quality food—that leaves them with skin conditions. They are frightened of people because they have rarely seen them but they usually get along well with other dogs.

ARF took on a group of these sad little creatures in early December, 2010. It included five Pekinese and a few Long-Haired Chihuahuas and Yorkies. We named the one of the male Pekineses Hector. He was three years old and so frightened of people that if you opened up his crate and reached in, he would turn his whole body away from you and plaster himself against the back of the crate, holding on the best he could with his paws. Hector had a severe infection in his right eye and it had to be surgically removed. So in addition to learning how to live a civilized life, little Hector had to adjust to life with one eye.

If you think about it, a life in a cage in the back of a veterinary office is a better life by far than the one Hector had before he joined ARF. He was cleaned up, fed good quality food twice a day, and learned to walk on a leash so he could begin the process of housetraining. He was not fond of cold weather but he made good progress and by early March, he would come to the front of his cage to get a treat and wag his tail in approval.

So it took this little guy three months to get this far and it was time for him to learn about home life. I took him to my house on March 3 where he joined my two permanent dogs and one other foster dog. He may have been the head stud dog at the puppy mill, but he was sweet and submissive to the rough-house crew of dogs he met here. His “role model” is Max, a 12 year old miniature poodle I adopted from ARF two years ago and the calmest of the group.

I kept a short soft leash on Hector so I could catch him in the house or yard. At first he would run from me but he always ran back to his crate and dived in as he felt safe there. In a couple of weeks, he was happy to come up and lick my hand if I reached down to him, but he was still scared about being picked up and would flop around like a fish once his feet were off the ground. He still wasn't fond of being outside and would sit by the back door as soon as he was done with the business he went out to do.

In a month, I could pick him up with no flopping and he would sit in an easy chair with me while I knitted fancy socks for up to half an hour at a time. He recognizes his name and wags his tail when talked to. Usually he will come when called.

However, Hector slept most of the time. Hey, I know dogs sleep way more than people, but Hector was the most consistent snoozer that I ever had. I am certain of this as he snores, not sounding like a freight train but you can hear him with the TV on. So I think Hector was pretty happy but still not a snuggler and still too shy for most people to consider adopting him.

I started taking him to ARF's Saturday PetSmart show. At first he was definitely scared but in the course of a couple of months, he has come to like it as long as he is in his crate. He is alert to all the PetSmart commotion and will lick any fingers that are stuck in his crate where he can reach them. He is no more frightened of children than of grown-ups and he continues to improve slowly.

A little more than six months after Hector first arrived, I took him to Bent Arrow Vet Clinic for a blood test to see if his sleepiness might have its roots in some kind of infection or illness. Happily, there were no signs of serious illness, but he was somewhat anemic. A course of antibiotic pills was prescribed.

Now Hector is a terrible pill taker. Traditionally, I can throw a heartworm pill down a dog's throat and gently hold his muzzle closed until he swallows it. A Pekinese has such a short nose that this maneuver is almost impossible. So I have to wrap Hector's pills in a small piece of cheese—he likes the individually wrapped slices of American cheese very much.

As of yesterday, Hector has been taking his antibiotic for a week. He knows what time of day he gets the pill and waits by the refrigerator until the cheese comes out, then gobbles up pill and cheese in just a few seconds.

Yesterday Hector jumped up against my leg while we were outside. Just a little thing in one way but now that you know all the background, you can see how far he has come in six months time. He did not have enough leg muscle to jump up then nor did he have enough pep then nor did he feel the happiness toward a person then that I could see in his big-mouth smile yesterday. Just a little thing but it touched my heart in a big way.

Throw Away Animals

We have a dog in the system now that was "kicked out" of his home because his owner got married and his new wife's doxie doesn't get along with Cozmo. Cozmo is a Great Pyrennes mix. Housetrained, leash trained, very sweet. The owner dumped him on his "grandparents" and they called ARF. They will keep him for a couple of more weeks and then they are going out of town, so that means Cozmo will go to a shelter.
ARF doesn't have a space for him. He won't tolerate a crate and he has been known to fight with small, bossy dogs.
It's infuriating to be in this position. But it happens all too frequently. Instead of taking responsibility, people dump dogs and cats as if they are not living creatures. Cozmo seems lonley and confused. They show him on Saturdays for half a day at PetSmart and he seems to be asking, "Why are we here? When am I going home?"
Breaks my heart.
If people could dump their unruly kids on volunteers like ARF, there would be tens of thousands of kids asking, "When am I going home?" The only thing that keeps a lot of people from dumping their kids is the social stigma and the law.
Pets aren't so fortunate.

A True Treasure

Allyson Fuller of Picture the Moment Photography, a fantastic dog photographer, will be on hand to capture every cute pose. We will have accessories available, such as bunny ears and bunny outfits, for your dogs (or you!) to wear if you want to dress them up for the occasion.

Each 15-minute session will cost $25 per dog or family and include one 8x10 or two 5x7s. Allyson will choose the best pose for each session. Free dog massages will also be available for the posing pooches. Cats are welcome too! We don't discriminate!

All proceeds will help us save more dogs from kill shelters, so please book your session today.

This dog's chance at ringing in the New Year were slim. He had been brought into the Sand Spring's shelter after being hit by a car. Koehler had a broken pelvis and required a very expensive and specialized procedure to survive. Dr. Huckaby from Bent Arrow Vet. and Tulsa Plastic Surgeon Dr. Koehler from Tulsa Surgical Arts joined forces. They donated their services and plated his hip. Darren Swiggett from Stryker-Leibinger donated the plates and screws! Amazing things happen when phenomenal people work together! Thank you all so much for saving Koehler. Sending you fuzzy lovin' and puppy kisses!

Koehler is getting a second chance at life. He is already putting some weight on his hip. Will you help keep him off the streets and headed in a pawsitive direction?

EXCITING BIRTH ANNNOUNCEMENTS!

We are proud foster parents to a litter of toy poodle puppies!
Their mommy is one of fifteen toy poodles rescued. We also got our paws on several Brussel Griffons.

A sweet little Chihuahua just gave birth too. Their Daddy is a mystery and Mommy won't kiss and tell. We suspect Pug or Boston Terrier.

Having the time and resources to take in dogs from breeders closing their doors means very much to us. ARF Tulsa spays or neuters every pet that we adopt out. This means that we do so much more than save one pet at a time. We help decrease pet overpopulation for generations to come with every rescue. We also see that they receive proper medical attention, a tattoo, vaccines and a loving home. Bringing in so many dogs and moving so quickly can take a toll on our volunteers and funds. Being forced to turn away a pet would take an even greater toll on our hearts. Thank you for supporting a lifetime of rescue and love.

Furry Fourth of July

All the festivities can have Rover's hair on end. Here is a Fourth of July checklist for your furry friend:

1. Make sure identification tags are secure and all information is current.

2. Be certain that your pet is safe and secure. A frightened pet becomes an instant Houdini. Shelters become flooded with runaway pets over the weekend.

3. If your pet is exceptionally anxious consider contacting your veterinary for a mild sedative to calm your animal down during the big boom.

The safest place for your pet is in your home home with access to a place of comfort. Most pets prefer to hide under beds, tables and couches when frightened. It is tempting to bring your pet with you to celebrate but it can be overwhelming for animals. The noise, activity and strange new smells is too much for most pets.

A Thousand Words Thursday

Nine year old Caroline mastered the art of giving and successfully launched her own fundraiser.

Caroline Cremin is a 4th grader in Oklahoma. She has always loved animals, especially dogs. Her family has two dogs named Tinkerbell and Cookie. The experience of adopting Cookie opened Caroline’s eyes to the overpopulation and neglect many animals face. She began searching for ways to help pets find homes and get the proper care they deserve. For her 9th birthday, Caroline received a bottle-cap necklace from a friend that had been purchased at a local boutique. She and her mother, Stacey Cremin, decided they would try to make their own version of bottle-cap necklaces. Together, they could custom design and sell them for a lower cost than the boutique and raise money to help abandoned pets. The response was overwhelming! Friends, family, and teachers purchased necklaces from Caroline. As Caroline began earning money, she thought about how the proceeds could best be spent. She and her family had learned about ARF from their friend and ARF volunteer, Diane Barker. Caroline shared ARF’s mission to rescue animals from city shelters and knew they needed extra money to provide for their care. After reaching her goal of two hundred dollars, Caroline happily donated the money to ARF. She feels a strong love and moral obligation to help homeless animals.

This sweetie was hit by a car and came to ARF broken and facing euthanasia. His surgery was expensive and ARF was faced with a very hard decision: euthanasia or costly surgery. ARF's final decision was guided by the promise made to each animal. Our promise is that we will do everything in our power to see that each love bug finds their way into our organization will not face abandonment, abuse or neglect ever gain. The price paid to honor that commitment was worth every penny and Barney is on the road to a full recovery. Thank you so much for your continued contribution. One of our most amazing volunteers is celebrating EIGHTY amazing years! ARF is so grateful she has spent many of those years rescuing animals and sharing her life with us.
Mabel was a head cook for Tulsa Public Schools for several years. Her husband was chief engineer at KOTV, Channel 6. She started volunteering in 1993, soon after her husband died of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She has adopted several ARF dogs over the years, fostered moms & puppies early on & some larger dogs. The last few years, after having both knees replaced (which only slowed her temporarily!) she has stayed with Chihuahuas. For several years she was the "go to" gal for ARF, driving to the shelter & filling her little station wagon with dogs. She would have leashes knotted out of every door, dogs secured inside, & crates in the middle. Many days she put 70 miles a day in, transporting dogs from the shelter to the vet to the groomer & back to the vet. Mabel was in charge of the 41st St Petsmart on Thursdays & Saturdays, & the 71st St Petsmart on Fridays. We stopped doing the Thursday booth about 8 or 9 years ago. Mabel is also very active in her church, still helping cook Wednesday night dinners & cooking lots of meals for funerals. No telling how many hundreds of cinnamon rolls she bakes every year: her dinner rolls & cinnamon rolls are the best! She has kept all the donated dog & cat supplies (along with the attending visitor mice) for many years.

ARF received a request to help a blind 4 month old schnauzer puppy in need of medication and some serious tender loving care. We sent a call for help to our volunteers and Sheila offered to nurture this love bug. The poor pup is on three different medications for his cough but is now assured to get the time and attention he needs. We hope to have him healthy, comfy, cozy and united with a forever home in no time. A very special thank you to the support of the Tulsa community. Phyllis and Richard's son, Duane, has lost his battle with cancer. There are no words or amount of hugs in the world to make this easier for Phyliss, Richard, his wife or seven children that loved him. They are in our thoughts and prayers. Phyliss and Richard have been faithful volunteers for over 10 years. They have adopted several hard to place ARF dogs & have fostered many dogs. They continue to set an example of kindness and a love for those around them. Duane and his children share that same loving spirit. His battle wasn't a battle fought alone but fought together with the love and support of his family and friends.

Duane's friends have set up a fund for the children.

A Place to Pawty

Neutered but still 100% stud

Hubby is ready to have himself fixed. We have two perfect two legged princesses and we’re all set. In support of his decision I visited http://www.spayok.org/ to ease his fears. So the good news is he is going to be less likely to mark his territory and once altered will be even less likely to roam. Looks like I will be saving money since I won't have to buy a shock collar to keep him from looking at other women. We were both worried about him getting fat and lazy once altered but that appears to be a myth. He will still be his handsome and protective self and any changes will be for the better. I think he still needs some support and reassurance. Please help me put his fears to rest!! Maybe your dogs and cats will go first and show him how easy it is. There are many cost effective programs in place for spaying or neutering pets in and around Oklahoma. We hope you support animal rescue by spaying or neutering your furry family members. Harriette was a hard luck case in need of some serious tender loving care and medication. She was abandoned in a shed with her mother and siblings with no food or water. When she came to us she had no hair left and was very timid and weak. She has stolen more than a few hearts. This sweetie really deserves a forever home and it looks like she found it. Her new family is showering her with love and attention.

An update from her new family...
"What a little snuggle bunny this puppy is! I can’t tell you how much love Harriette has added to our household. She is the sweetest little dog and has acclimated so well with our two other dogs. We have Maggie, a 14 year old dachshund, and Bug, a 5 year old Boston/French Bull mix, who is also a rescued pet. Harriette and Maggie have a great time together, and Bug would love to play, but gets a bit too boisterous for such a little girl! We supervise his play very closely! Just like a child, he’s a bit jealous of the “new baby”.

I took Harriette to get her rabies and distemper shot yesterday and she had gained ½ pound since coming to live with us on October 16th. Her skin problems are slowly resolving, however, her doctor wants to keep her on the medication for another couple of months. She loves my husband, but is definitely showing a preference for me. If both laps are available, she will choose mine, which is 100% OK with me!"

March, 2008
A young family with two young girls and a girl black and tan mini-doxie came to PetSmart to buy a dress for their own dog. Then their girls saw Peanut and the rest was history. The whole family came to the adoption and brought Peanut a camouflage-colored sweater of his own.
Red has come to live here for now. He is another Min-Pin mix. By now I see a pattern — all the dogs Judy picks are male. Red taught me to pick up my shoes and put them away. He chewed some bungee cord shoelaces on my favorite spring shoes. I couldn’t find new ones in the store, so I called the catalog company where I bought them, told them about ARF and Red, and was sent two pair of FREE bungee cord shoe laces. Thanks Land’s End. Red is in a very high energy stage, like any teen-aged boy.
Red was adopted by a couple in an apartment. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. ARF took him back, another foster home took him in, and he has since found his forever home.
I picked Max, a middle-aged Boston terrier, as a break from the active teen-aged dogs. Max had become an ARF rescue shortly after the ice storm, when he arrived at our veterinarian’s offices with very little hair and very bad skin infection, one eye in such poor shape it had to be removed, and almost unable to walk from cracked infected paws.
He has spent several months with the vet; everybody there loves his happy spirit and will to survive. I fell in love with that big-mouth smile the minute I saw him. Judy is jealous and she bit Max in the backside several times over the first few days. He hid his head in the sofa pillows and let her do it. After a week, he was fed up and bit her once. That was the end of biting at my house.

In late January, an ARF Help line call from a just-retired beautician quickly led to Lenny’s adoption. Karen now says it took a few months for Lenny to warm up to her husband, but he listened to her every word and followed her everywhere from the first day. Yes, it was hard to say good-bye, but I know he has a great home where he is well-fed, loved, and taken care of.

I picked up Peanut this week; a young, male, black and tan dachshund. I never had a doxie before and really enjoyed how he propped himself up when sitting beside me in my favorite chair, so he could give me warm kisses. In the house, Judy could outrun Peanut easily, but he could soon figure out shortcuts and they were buddies within a week.

A Puppy Poem Shades of Crenshaw

It started when he jumped into the rocking chair
Knowing full well he was wrong and shouldn't be there.
He spied something shiny on the table in the basket
And plucked it out and made a snack of it.

The clip-on sunglasses crunched, crunched, crunched
As Crewshaw munched, munched, munched.

After awhile he started feeling funny
Then something began moving and growling in his tummy.
When his foster mom found the leftover bits he had nibbled
The rest had already come back up along with Alpo and Kibbles.

She gave him a frowny face. Hey, what's with her?
He wouldn't be Crenshaw if he didn't create a stir.

But it was worth the frowns and upset tummy
Although the sunglasses weren't all that yummy
They were still worth his foster mom's tirades
Because they were his very first pair of designer eye shades!

I joined ARF to help out on Saturdays at PetSmart. My landlord said, “No dogs.” I shuddered as she said it. But every other Saturday gives me enough dog-fix to get me through.
September, 2007
I have moved to my very own house. I want to be an ARF foster mom. I just want to unpack most of the boxes and put things away before I start.
October, 2007
A stray Jack Russell terrier has come into my life and stayed. She has quickly become the queen of the neighborhood, a friend to all my neighbors, totally dedicated to the mission of ridding our street of squirrels. I still want to foster.
I am a retired person of Medicare age and I figure I could help two or three dogs in my remaining active years if I adopt, and many, many more if I foster. Judy, the Jack Russell, is dog-friendly most of the time.
Early December, 2007
I took Judy with me to pick the foster dog she liked. We picked Lenny, a smooth velvety reddish-brown Min Pin mix, about a year old. Lenny had heartworm when ARF rescued him and has finished his treatments, although I am supposed to keep him quiet. No one has told Lenny this! He is a happy, active boy, dashing around the house and enjoying our daily outdoor walks.
Late December, 2007
The ice storm came and the power went off for nine days. I was never happier to have my two little bed warmers, just the right kind of heat generators. Some little dogs just hate to go outside in bad weather, but these two were troopers, seeming to understand good behavior counts double in difficult times.

The Dog Hollerer

I am a big fan of Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer, and his TV show of the same name on cable (National Geographic Channel). He speaks knowingly of being the “calm and assertive leader” and I dig that! I want to be that for my dogs.
However, with my dogs and the foster dogs from ARF, I am often The Dog Hollerer.” I, of course, blame it on the dogs. Cesar would sit me down and explain in his charming Latino accent that I am the problem, not the dogs. And he would be correct (darn it).
Even as I type this, I am stopping to turn around and holler at my dogs to please shut up. They are barking at a man and woman walking outside in a calm and assertive way with their calm and submissive Sheltie. My dogs are going ballistic inside the house as they watch the calmness.
Cesar says to stand near your dogs, say something guttural, and let your superior “I mean business, buddy” aura do the trick. It does the trick for him. Sometimes it works on my dogs.
Crenshaw, one of the foster dogs I have right now, is another story. He came to my home not knowing his name, neither his ARF name (Crenshaw) nor the adopted name he was called for awhile (Chauncey). The adopter was a mature lady who said that Crenshaw was WAY too much for her, what with his teeth and his claws ripping at her. His nails were long, but that was easily fixed at the groomer’s. His teeth can’t be fixed. He has a lower jaw overbite that is really kind of cute. Crenshaw does not have a face – he has a mug. He can’t help it if his sticking-out teeth hang on skin every so often.
After weeks and weeks he finally knows his name. He looks at me when I holler “Crenshaw!” or “Crennie, stop that!” That, my friends, is progress. He is young – not quite a year old. We got him when he was only a few months old. It was thought that he would be adopted quickly and “stick” with some family. Crennie has had rotten luck. I’m hoping his luck will change soon.
Lately, he has taken it upon himself to barrel up into my lap. This is sweet, but startling. Sort of like having a cannon ball land on you out of the blue. After I get my breath back, I pet him and tell him he’s a gorgeous kid. He likes that.
He is not impressed with my calm and assertive self. He looks blankly at me when I discipline him “Cesar style.” Sometimes he barks back at me as if to say, “Snap out of it, woman!” When I holler he pays some attention to me, if only for a fleeting minute.
